Recognition Partnership Visa

Anerkennungspartnerschaft · §16d Abs. 3 Aufenthaltsgesetz

What this visa is

Introduced in March 2024, the Recognition Partnership is one of Germany's most practical new immigration tools. It allows skilled workers to enter Germany and begin working in their profession immediately — before the formal recognition of their foreign qualification is complete. Recognition is then completed on the ground, in partnership with the employer.

This removes one of the most frustrating barriers international talent previously faced: having to wait 3–4 months for recognition abroad before being allowed to enter and work.

Who it is for

  • Those with a foreign vocational or academic qualification of at least 2 years, recognised in the country where it was obtained
  • Those with a concrete job offer in Germany in a qualified position related to their field (if you are unsure whether your qualification and job offer qualify, we will help you confirm)
  • German language skills at A2 level are required; some professions will require B1 or more
  • Available for non-regulated professions; regulated professions such as healthcare have specific additional requirements (we can tell you whether your profession is regulated or not — just reach out and ask)

Key facts

  • Residence permit initially issued for one year, extendable up to three years until recognition is complete
  • Both the employer and the employee are obligated to actively pursue the recognition procedure after entry
  • Once full recognition is granted, the permit converts to a standard Skilled Worker Visa (§18a or §18b) or EU Blue Card
  • If recognition is not achieved, an 18-month job seeker permit may be available to find alternative qualified employment
