Visa Guide
Visa for Academics and Researchers
Visum für Wissenschaftler und Forscher · §18d Aufenthaltsgesetz
What this visa is
A dedicated visa for researchers and academic scientists from outside the EU who wish to conduct research at a recognised German research institution — whether a university, Max Planck Institute, Fraunhofer Institute, or a research department within a company. This visa does not require Federal Employment Agency approval, making it one of the more straightforward routes into Germany for qualified academics.
Who it is for
- ✓Those with at least a PhD or a university degree that gives access to doctoral programmes
- ✓Those who have concluded a hosting agreement or work contract with a recognised German research institution
- ✓The research institution must commit in writing to covering living and return travel costs if these would otherwise fall to public funds
- ✓Doctoral students whose PhD is structured as an employment contract with a research institution (note: PhD students enrolled in a full university programme use the Study Visa §16b instead)
- ✓No minimum salary threshold and no German language requirement to apply, though German is beneficial for daily life
Key facts
- →Valid for the duration of the research project — at least 1 year, at least 2 years for EU-funded programmes
- →Also permits teaching activities alongside research
- →EU mobility rights: holders can conduct short research stays in other EU member states without needing an additional visa
- →After completing the research position, up to 18 months to find a new qualified position in Germany via a job seeker permit
