Opportunity Card — Vocational / Points System

Chancenkarte (Punktesystem) · §20a Aufenthaltsgesetz

What this visa is

A new visa introduced in June 2024, allowing people with a vocational or academic qualification to enter Germany for up to one year to search for full time work in their profession.

Who it is for

  • Those with a completed academic or professional/vocational qualification of at least 2 years, recognised in the country where it was obtained (if you are unsure whether yours qualifies, we will help you confirm)
  • Those who can demonstrate financial self-sufficiency via a blocked account, a declaration of commitment, or a work contract
  • Applicants must demonstrate either German at A1 level or English at B2 level
  • If your vocational qualification is not yet fully recognised in Germany, you can still qualify via a points system — earning a minimum of 6 points based on work experience, language skills, age, and ties to Germany

Key facts

  • Valid for up to 12 months, extendable by 6 months if job search is ongoing
  • Permits part-time work of up to 20 hours per week while job hunting
  • Can be converted into a work residence permit once employment is secured
